BACK IN BLACK

About four years ago, I was running my Instagram page, @ClassicsDaily, and this fast-talking dude from New Jersey gets a hold of me to talk about working together. This was the first time I met Steven Hummel and we’ve become good friends since. Since we’ve known each other, he’s been building and perfecting his ’67 Camaro RS.

When I met him, he already has the nasty Chevrolet Performance LSX454 crate engine installed, but was riding on RideTech suspension with air on a set of Forgelines. He loved the look, but couldn’t get the air to ride like he wanted. He toyed with the idea of replacing the suspension and ended up buying a full setup from Detroit Speed with their front subframe and everything. Before he installed this setup, he decided to hurt some feelings and put a set of wide Forgelines on stretched tires and aired it out to give is a stanced look. This took everyone at SEMA off guard that year. While it definitely stood out, it wasn’t what Steven wanted the car to be. It was time for version 2.0.

Steven tore this car apart to install the new Detroit Speed parts in his garage with a few friends. Over about a month, he would send me pictures of the car on jackstands. It looked like there was no hope for the poor car at times, but he got it done! While he was getting rid of the air ride, he still yearned for the ability to adjust ride height. The solution for this was JRi Shocks new hydraulic coilover system. This system is nothing like the hydro’s you’ll find on your buddies lowrider. This system is a race-ready solution to adjustable ride height. Since Steven is the ultimate stance and wheel nerd, he set the top of that ride height adjustment barely at street ride height so that he could use every bit of adjustment to set the car on the ground.

The car has nothing but the best parts throughout. The only thing Steven hasn’t decided on yet is what color he wants to paint it. He’s a big fan of yellow and is thinking about a yellow and black color scheme, but I’m hoping he keeps her dark and sinister with a bright set of wheels. Steven swaps wheels like my wife changes her hair color, so these killer Forgeline FF3-C’s may not last long. We look forward to seeing how everybody receives his car at LS Fest when he shows up with it and a trailer full of his Chevrolet Performance licensed LSx apparel. Stay tuned for more on this ride.
