FUNCTION MEETS FORM

About a year ago, I got a text from my buddy David Carroll talking about doing something nobody had yet, utilizing Chevrolet Performance’s new LTG 4-cylinder turbo crate engine in an old car. Specifically, a ’73 Vega GT.

Ideas are great, but putting pen to paper and putting wrenches to bolts are two very different things. David started the build early in 2017 and swore he was going to make it to Hot Rod’s annual Power Tour. After not making it for HRPT17, he was shooting for the USCA event at Pikes Peak International Raceway. Yet again, the typical car-building issues got in the way and instead the car made its debut a month or so later at a Super Chevy Magazine event, then for the Fontana USCA event.

This 2,700-lb lightweight puts out a hair over 300hp and around 350 lb-ft of torque. That’s plenty to motivate this ride around the autocross. With a hodge-podge of chassis pieces, David managed to make this into the ultimate handling Vega. Unfortunately the factory wheel wells didn’t allow room for big sticky tires, so he threw on a set of fender flares from a Holden Torana and fit 275’s on all four.

While David has this thing “finished” as most people see it, it is far from finished. There is always room for more power, a different look and MUCH more. Stay tuned on what David has coming for this ride.
