THE ORIGINAL MUSCLE CAR

There’s nothing in this world like jumping in a V8-powered muscle car from the 60’s and 70’s and cruising down the road. It’s intoxicating. It’s driven many of us to do things we would normally not even think of to achieve that feeling. Some people cook, some people garden, some people fish, but we drive.

The birth of the muscle car has been argued by many as to when it began. Either with the bootleggers or the ’55 Chrysler 300 with its 300-horsepower Chrysler Firepower 331ci Hemi, most agree on one car being the first true-blue muscle car; the 1964 Pontiac GTO. The GTO was a result of stepping on many people’s toes to bring the Pontiac brand alive. After getting an order to kill their racing programs from the higher-ups at GM and pissing off Ferrari with the GTO name, the GTO’s creation was no clean experience. While it may have been messy, it spawned something incredible. The 348-horsepower, 389ci Tri-Power GTO was a legend in 1964. The 14-second ¼ mile time was unheard of for a car off the showroom floor at the time. Cars like this are what led to the modern cars of today such as the Dodge Demon running 9.65 in the ¼ off of the showroom floor.

This GTO is the successor to the 1964 model. Pontiac bored the 389 to 4.12”, displacing a total of 400ci. This was the beginning of the 400 Pontiac which is still a formidable engine to this day. While it made similar power to the 289, with some minor tune-ups this could be a serious drag strip contender. Our GTO packs the original 400 under the hood just like it came from the factory with the addition of a Vintage Air Surefit A/C system to keep you cool while driving your hot rod. It’s also sitting on a set of YearOne’s 17” Pontiac Rally wheels which emulate the classic wheels that these cars came with, but with a stiffer sidewall give it a more planted feel and more handling prowess. The A-body platform, shared with the Chevelles, Cutlass, etc. is an extremely versatile platform and with minor modifications you could make this ride into a corner carver. This one won’t last long!
